Through a Writing Academy organised by lecturers of German Studies, held at Pwani University in Kilifi in early March, 23 students of German Studies at Kenyan universities discovered the German language in a new and unique way. They not only improved their German writing and speaking skills – the experience motivated them ever further to learn German. Some of the participating students were from countries as far as Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, and Sudan. They pursue their 'Master in German Studies' the University of Nairobi.

After collecting ideas while visiting a tuktuk driver, the Mnarani ruins, the Bombolulu workshop, a children’s home, and a yoga teacher, the students produced short stories, poems, theatre plays, interviews, and fairy tales of which the best were chosen for presentation and publication.

The Writing Academy culminated in a German Day at Pwani University that was attended by more than 100 high school students and their teachers. The workshop participants presented their texts and also shared their experience with German Studies as a university subject.

The lecturers are now working on the final product: An anthology featuring the best texts of the Writing Academy. Writing is an adventure!
